Aqua restaurant | Los Gigantes Tenerife

The Aqua restaurant is ‘the brainchild’ of Tenerife’s most celebrated chef Lucas Maes who currently owns and runs three restaurants on the island. Lucas was originally from Belgium, he grew up in Tenerife where his passion for creating different dishes and flavours was born.

Its Location

The Aqua restaurant is located on the Royal Sun Resort’s second floor, which takes advantage of the stunning views of Los Gigantes, the ocean, cliffs and the island of La Gomera. As you dine the beautiful sunset is in full view.

The decor

With only ten dining tables for evening dining, this ‘booking only’ restaurant aims for an intimate dining experience. It has recently had a refurb which has a stunning contemporary design of blue aquatic tones teamed with warm greys, whites and dark wood. There are lush green tropical foliage perfectly placed throughout the space and a beautiful red Orchid flower on each table.

The restaurant’s outside seating is a great feature where you can enjoy after dinner drinks and enjoy the view.

The menu

You can choose from the a la carte menu prices ranging from on average 13 to 36 euros or, you can order from the tasting menu sampling several starters and fish and meat mains and desert for 55 euros.  All the food is stunningly prepared with sophistaction. There is a fully licensed bar with a wine list, including celebrated wines produced in Tenerife. Our bottle of local white cost 36 euros, the kids Diet Pepsi cost 4 euros each and a bottle of still water cost 5 euros.

All the food is prepared in the chefs open kitchen at the front of the restaurant.

The restaurant offers a lovely children’s menu of pasta, meat and chicken dishes. They are happy to modify the kids dishes to tailor their palette.

We had a selection of flavoured breads with mozzarella cheese, olives, butter and dipping sauces for the entree.

For the starter we enjoyed the tomato chutney with mozzarella and green leaves.

For the main course Kia and I chose the pork cheek with creamed Canarian potatoes.

Sean had the fish of the day with tomatoe vinaigrette.

Final Thoughts

Our fine dining experience in the Aqua restaurant a very enjoyable experience. The Aqua is obviously a stunnng space for dining and the privileged location over looking the stunning cliffs and harbour of Gigantes provides for a beautiful and unique dining experience. If we were to return in the future, we would probably order the taster menu.

The service was friendly and professional however, the atmosphere was a little intense. For us, the staff were concentrating so much in trying to achieve perfection it lacked atmosphere. If the service team were a little more relaxed it would have been a more relaxed dining experience. So from a customer point of veiw, I think a few little tweaks such as a little background music and a cocktail menu would avoid the sometimes awkward atmosphere. In my opinion fine dining doesn’t need to be as formal as our experience was at the Aqua. It was a great opportunity for the children to experience fine dining whilst staying at the Royal Sun Resort and the staff seem to genuinely enjoy the children’s presence.
